Tottenham Hotspur maintained their 100 per cent start to the Barclays Premier League season after West Ham United gifted them Jermain Defoe’s equaliser and Aaron Lennon’s winner at Upton Park in a 2-1 win.

The Hammers were leading through Carlton Cole’s spectacular volley but the England striker’s backpass then set up Defoe to level against his former club.

Another mistake led to Lennon’s winner, with Jonathan Spector slipping at the vital moment and the winger taking full advantage to rifle into the bottom corner.

Since leaving West Ham, Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has an impressive record of getting results at Upton Park – but he does not usually need help from his former club.

Sebastien Bassong also went wide from another Modric free-kick – but it was not entirely one-way traffic and West Ham had the clearer chances in the first half even if they had less of the ball.

Zola is desperate to buy another striker before the transfer window closes but a shortage in attack is bringing the best out of Cole going forward – even if he was guilty of a blunder for the equaliser.

He volleyed over early on after chasing down a long pass and juggling the ball like he did when playing for England against Holland.

When Spector threaded a ball through and Jimenez intelligently dummied, Cole ran through and saw Carlo Cudicini block his finish.Cudicini had already been called into action when Scott Parker latched onto a poor clearance and struck a 35-yard volley that had the Italian stopper scrambling across his goalline to save.

Spurs enjoyed the majority of possession early on and looked dangerous going forward, with Hammers goalkeeper Robert Green kept busy in the early stages when Tom Huddlestone launched a fearsome drive towards the near post.

Luka Modric forced Green into a save at the near post and went wide, with the Croatia playmaker also setting up the chance that saw Ledley King hit the crossbar on the half-hour mark.

Luis Jimenez was booked for a foul on Benoit Assou-Ekotto in the build-up, with Modric whipping over the free-kick and King’s looping header bouncing off the woodwork.

Then Junior Stanislas was sent down the left with a 60-yard pass from James Collins and the youngster carried the ball into the area – but his dangerous cross was just too far in front of Cole.

Cole broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half with his unstoppable volley.

Despite his height, Jimenez managed to get his head on the ball, cushioning it back to Cole 25 yards out. The 25-year-old took a touch before swinging with his left foot and sending his effort crashing past Cudicini.

But the Hammers striker went from hero to villain in the space of five minutes. There was no danger when he held the ball up near the halfway line but his pass backwards turned into a perfect through-ball for Defoe.

The former Hammers striker accepted the invitation and lashed past Green for his sixth goal in four matches this season for club and country.

Modric almost gave Spurs the lead shortly after but headed just wide when Lennon found him at the far post, while the hosts felt they should have had a penalty when Assou-Ekotto hauled down Jimenez.

Defoe, in turn, thought he should have had a spot-kick when Julien Faubert challenged him – but Mark Clattenburg waved play on again. Cole, looking to atone for his mistake, cut inside and went just wide with his shot.

Lennon’s winning goal came with 11 minutes remaining. Spector lost his footing when there was little danger apparent, with Lennon nipping in and unleashing a drive into the far corner.

Goals in each half from Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka settled the contest in Chelsea’s favour.
The Blues have made a fabulous start to the season under new coach Carlo Ancelotti and the scoreline could have been higher.
Chelsea wasted a chance to punish Fulham as early as the 12th minute when Drogba was brought down on the edge of the penalty area by Fulham captain Danny Murphy.
Michael Ballack elected to try his luck with the free-kick from 25 yards out in a central position but put his effort a yard over the bar.
The Blues had dominated the opening half but had failed to add a cutting edge to their possession.
John Obi Mikel had Mark Schwarzer flinging himself to his right in the 21st minute when the Nigerian midfielder despatched a 20-yard volley towards the top corner. However, fortunately for the Fulham goalkeeper, Mikel’s effort flashed wide of the upright.
Fulham responded quickly but a cross from Murphy was easily held by Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal.

The home side had done little to suggest they had the firepower to trouble Chelsea’s rearguard.
Chelsea continued to press for an opening goal but their final ball was a disappointment on numerous occasions.Captain John Terry was an example of their growing frustration when he tried his luck from 25 yards – but Schwarzer was left untroubled by Terry’s piledriver as it soared over the bar.

But Chelsea finally broke the deadlock in the 38th minute when a fine three-man move left Fulham floored.
Frank Lampard slipped the ball through to Anelka, who in turn put Drogba in the clear with a clever pass.
The Ivory Coast international made no mistake as he slipped the ball beyond the advancing Schwarzer for his third goal of the season.

It was just reward for Chelsea’s first-half domination and a perfect example of how to pass the ball through an opposing defence. Drogba managed to get clear of the Fulham defence again moments later but he was ruled marginally offside. Fulham almost fluked an equaliser in the 50th minute when Murphy’s deep cross into the penalty area was headed over his own goal by Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho.

But Chelsea’s domination was soon restored and Drogba almost grabbed a second in the 54th minute when he latched on to a clever lob by Anelka.
This time, however, the Ivory Coast striker was denied at the second attempt by Australian goalkeeper Schwarzer.

Ancelotti’s side were in total control and Florent Malouda should have done better when he shot wide on the hour – his angled drive flashing wide of the far post.

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson replaced the ineffective Zoltan Gera with Diomansy Kamara in the 62nd minute to loud cheers of approval from the home fans.
Chelsea’s neat approach play had everything, guile, surprise, intelligent running off the ball and accurate passing.

The only real surprise of the afternoon was that the scoreline remained 1-0 to the Blues.
Fulham could not cope with Malouda’s pace and trickery on the left flank and but for some last-gasp defending from the home side, Chelsea would have increased their advantage.

The Cottagers were dealt another blow in the 69th minute when captain Murphy went off injured to be replaced by Chris Baird.
Chelsea went two goals in front in the 76th minute when Drogba turned supplier for Anelka.

The France international rounded Schwarzer and coolly slotted the ball home to make sure of all three points for Chelsea and preserve their 100 per cent start to the new season.

Liverpool slumped to their second Barclays Premier League defeat in nine days to put their title credentials firmly on the line.
Aston Villa produced a defiant, organised display and deserved their first win at Anfield since 2001.
The result also ended Liverpool’s 31-match unbeaten home league record stretching back to December 2007, when Manchester United were the last winners at Anfield.The spotlight will now be on Liverpool, who only lost twice in the league last season and still did not win the title. The margin for error is now very fine. You rarely win the crown by losing more than five matches in a season, and Liverpool’s hopes could already have suffered a mortal blow.
A Lucas own goal and a Curtis Davies header saw Villa 2-0 up at the break. Fernando Torres pulled one back but an Ashley Young penalty settled matters soon after.
Liverpool produced a vibrant start, but found themselves frustrated by the quick-tackling, quick-thinking Villa midfield.The hosts could have been ahead in the first minute when Yossi Benayoun’s back-header from Torres’ chip into the area, beat Friedel but dropped inches wide.

A taste of what was to follow came from Villa’s first chance came when Davies met a Nicky Shorey cross with a strong header, but it went straight at Jose Reina.
Torres and Steven Gerrard both saw shots blocked in the six-yard box, before Young was booked after 12 minutes for halting a Dirk Kuyt run.

Then Gerrard struck a first-timer from 20-yards just over from Kuyt’s touched pass.
But Liverpool’s problems were beginning to mount in a midfield that they were unable to dominate.
Javier Mascherano and Lucas were both fortunate not to be cautioned for fouls on Petrov and Agbonlahor in quick succession.

Torres was also coming in for some rough treatment from Carlos Cuellar, two tackles from behind going unpunished by referee Martin Atkinson.
By now Nigel Reo-Coker and Steve Sidwell were successfully breaking up Gerrard’s flow in midfield, and Villa were soon to take the lead.

It came after 33 minutes when Lucas gave away a needless free-kick in midfield. Young swung the set-piece towards the near post, and it was the unfortunate Lucas who rose to head the ball past Reina for an own-goal.

Liverpool’s play was sloppy and far too much possession was being conceded with ill-directed passes.
Further calamity came after Reina was booked in first half injury time for kicking the ball away in annoyance when referee Atkinson awarded a disputed corner, Sidwell’s shot looking to have clipped a defender.
And from that disputed corner Villa found themselves two up. Shorey’s corner swung into the near post and was headed home by Davies.

The hosts have staged some amazing comebacks in this stadium over the years, and they were going to need another massive performance to salvage anything from this situation.
Villa defended with organisation and desire. Roe-Coker was booked for kicking the ball away, and Friedel produced a fine save from a Kuyt header.

Kuyt then saw another header hit a post from a Gerrard corner from the left.
But Villa were still showing great resilience, and breaking quickly to cause Liverpool all sorts of problems at the back, Reo-Coker being only inches away from a third with one sliding attempt.

Liverpool sent on Andriy Voronin for Lucas after 66 minutes, with Friedel producing another fine stop from a Gerrard drive soon after.
But after 72 minutes Liverpool finally gave themselves some hope when Emiliano Insua got down the left and rolled the ball into the six-yard box for Torres to score.

Two minutes later Liverpool were back in despair and Villa celebrating. Shorey’s pass into the path of Reo-Coker saw the midfielder surge into the box only to be felled by Gerrard’s desperate tackle.
It was a clear penalty and Young stepped up to restore Villa’s two-goal lead.
Liverpool’s frustration was obvious. Torres was booked for dissent when Young went down injured and asked for treatment. He was eventually replaced by Heskey.

Ryan Babel came on for Benayoun, Liverpool still coming forward. Friedel again made a fine save from a Torres flick, before Kuyt sent a close range effort wide of the far post.
The outstanding Friedel, against his former club, saved from Torres and Glen Johnson, with Skrtel booked in the dying minutes, but Villa held on for a famous victory.

He became South Africa’s first black athlete to be ranked number one in the world. He made the 800 m final at four consecutive World Athletics Championships, and won his first gold medal in the event in 2009.

Merritt beat the two-time defending world champion, clocking the fastest time in the world this year at 44.06 seconds. Wariner finished in 44.60. Rennie Quow of Trinidad and Tobago took the bronze in 45.02.

The Americans didn’t fare as well in the men’s 400-meter relay. Soon after turning in the fastest time in the race, the team was disqualified for passing the baton outside of the designated zone at Olympic Stadium. The Americans appealed, citing inconclusive video footage, but it was rejected. This latest miscue comes after a botched exchange at the Beijing Olympics last summer.

American Allyson Felix broke the Jamaicans’ stranglehold in the sprints, holding off Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown to win the 200 meters. Felix finished in 22.02 seconds to Campbell-Brown’s 22.35. She became the first woman to win three gold medals in a sprint event at the world championships.

BERLIN — LaShawn Merritt won a second gold medal at the world championships on Sunday when the United States blew away the field in the 4×400-meter relay.

Merritt, the 400 champion, ran the anchor leg and took the baton home in 2 minutes, 57.86 seconds.

Britain took silver in 3:00.53, and Australia picked up the bronze in 3:00.90.

The American team was a two-time defending champion and reigning Olympic champion.

Usain Bolt made it three out of three as he helped Jamaica claim gold in the 4×100 metres relay at the world championships on Saturday in the second-fastest time ever run.

Their victory in 37.31 seconds was bettered only by their winning time of 37.10 at last year’s Beijing Olympics.

It completed another great night for the Jamaican sprinters after the women won the 4×100 gold and both 4×400 teams qualified for Sunday’s final.

The 21-year-old Brathwaite, who failed to reach the finals at the Beijing Olympic Games and Osaka worlds 2007, beat American veteran Terrence Trammell in a photo finish to win the gold in 13.14 seconds.
Trammell, silver medalist two years ago, won the silver in 13.15, his compatriot David Payne, silver winner at last year’s Olymic Games and third placer in Osaka, won the bronze again, also in 13.15.

“This is just great!” said Brathwaite. “It did happen. I am very happy. This is due to hard work. And my dream really has come true.”

He added, “My coach told me that I am going to win the gold medal. Barbados is only a small country, but I showed the world who I am. It was a very competitive race, shocking and exciting.

“I am just grateful of myself. I just want to maintain my strength this year and the next years until the next Olympics.”

Trammell, who has never won in Olympic Games or World Championships, was very disappointed.

“It was not good,” he said. “I hit the last hurdle and it slowed me down. I cannot afford to do this – especially not at the World championships. Ryan is a young kid and he became a world champion. It is something above his ability.”

Defending champion Liu Xiang of China, who is still recuperating a foot injury, didn’t enter the race. Olympic champion and world record holder Dayron Robles of Cuba failed to make it into the final, pulling up injured after hitting the first three hurdles in his semifinal heat. Robles had been battling a hamstring injury the past few weeks and struggled in Wednesday’s heats.

Blitzing round the bend with the rest of the field disappearing in his wake, he powered up the home straight and, with teeth gritted, crossed the line with the digits “19.20″ frozen on the electronic display. We were still gaping in amazement when the display clicked down to 19.19.

It was another quantum leap for sprinting kind by the 6ft 5in phenomenon, matching the margin by which he had broken his 100m record last Sunday, 0.11sec. When Bolt dropped flat on his back in celebration, Berlino the mascot picked him up and the pair pulled the trademark “To the World” Bolt pose in tandem. The crowd roared, all 75,000 of them. And the clowning Lightning Bolt could hardly stop laughing.

Caster Semenya, an 18-year-old South African, last night won gold in the 800 metres but she may be forced to return the medal if she fails a gender-verification test.

Semenya, unknown on the world stage until this week, is now a world champion but is probably already more notorious for the unfortunate situation where her sexuality has been officially questioned and where it is publicly known that she has been asked to undergo medical examination to prove that she is female.

Her victory last night was notably dominant, particularly for a newcomer, and comments afterwards from her beaten rivals emphasised the unpleasant situation in which she now finds herself. Mariya Savinova, the Russian who was fifth, raised doubts over the winner’s gender and Elisa Piccione, the Italian who finished sixth, was more damning. “For me, she is not a woman,” Piccione said. No one should be accusing Semenya of cheating, though. Instead, her strength and appearance have raised fears that she may have been born with a rare abnormality, where she has grown up with the genitalia of a woman but the chromosomes of a male.

The storm growing around her is such that last night’s race was a comparative moment’s calm. After she had beaten Kenya’s Janeth Jepkosgei and Britain’s Jenny Meadows into second and third respectively, she did half a lap of honour before being whisked out of the stadium, avoiding the media mixed zone and the winner’s press conference.

Wayne Rooney was the hero for Manchester United as they won the first game of the season with a workmanlike performance at Old Trafford. On 34 minutes, the deadlock was broken when a pinpoint delivery from Nani was placed onto Rooney’s head, following some neat interplay, though while his initial effort struck the post, he was able to competently convert the close range rebound.

At the 2009 World Championships in August, Bolt eased through the 100 m heats, clocking the fastest ever pre-final performance of 9.89 seconds. The final was the first time Bolt and Gay had met in the season, and the American ran 9.71 seconds, 0.02 off Bolt’s world record run in Beijing. However, Bolt finished some distance ahead of Gay, improving the world record to 9.58 seconds to win his first World Championship gold medal. Taking over a tenth of a second off the previous best mark, this was the largest ever margin of improvement in the 100 m world record since the beginning of electronic timing.
